Linden was formed as a township on March 4th, 1861 from portions of Elizabeth, Rahway, and Union Township which were originally known as the Elizabethtown Tract purchased from the Lenape Indians. Linden was incorporated as a city in 1925, combing Linden Township and Borough together. The city gets its name from linden trees brought from Germany.

Linden, together with Rahway, is home to Merck and Co, one of the worlds leading pharmaceutical companies. Linden was also home to General Motors from 1937-2005. The site is now being redeveloped, as is much of the town. Currently, there are several housing developments taking place as well as efforts to revitalize the downtown.

Linden is a short ride to New York City with a direct train line stopping in the center of town and is close to all major highways and Newark Airport, making it a very commutable city. There are over forty parks throughout the town and even a bird sanctuary created by the New Jersey Audobon Society. There are lots of seasonal events that are coordinated by the Linden Cultural and Heritage Committee, such as street fairs, concerts, craft fairs and plays in the promenade downtown.
